Removal

NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.

NOTE: LHD shown, RHD similar.

All vehicles

  1. Detach the parking brake control boot and position the boot upward on the handle.
  1. Remove and discard the lock nut.
  1. Loosen the parking brake cable adjustment nut 5 full turns.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
    Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview (100-02 Jacking and Lifting, Description and Operation).

1.5L

  1. Remove the nuts and the heat shields.
    Torque: 27 lb.in (3 Nm)

2.0L

  1. Remove the nuts and the crossbrace.
    Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)
  1. Remove the nuts and position the heat shield to allow access to the parking brake cable equalizer.
    Torque: 27 lb.in (3 Nm)

Four wheel drive (4WD) vehicles

  1. Remove the nuts and the exhaust heat shield.
    Torque: 27 lb.in (3 Nm)

All vehicles

  1. Remove the parking brake cable equalizer plug.
  1. Press inward on the tabs and detach the parking brake cables from the bracket.
    1. Align the end of the front cable with the hole in the equalizer.
    1. Rotate both rear cables upward.
    1. Disconnect the front cable from the equalizer.

Front wheel drive (FWD) vehicles

  1. On both sides.
    Pry upward on the parking brake cable union locking tab.
  1. On both sides.
    Detach the rear parking brake cable from the rear cable union.
  1. On both sides.
    Press inward on the tabs and detach the rear parking brake cable from the axle.

Four wheel drive (4WD) vehicles

  1. On both sides.
    Detach the rear parking brake cable from the rear cable union.
  1. On both sides.
    Detach the rear parking brake cable from the rear cable union.
  1. On both sides.
    Remove the bolt and detach the rear parking brake cable from the axle.

All vehicles

    1. Remove the bracket fasteners.
      Torque:
         Front wheel drive (FWD) nuts:   18 lb.ft (25 Nm)
         Four wheel drive (4WD) bolts:   18 lb.ft (25 Nm)
    1. Detach the cable retainers and the remove the rear parking brake cables.

Installation

  1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  1. Adjust the parking brake cables.
