Overdrive Clutch

For overdrive clutch operation,

NOTE: The Low Reverse and Overdrive clutches use SSD, CBLR/C456 regulator valve, SSD SIG and CBLR/C456 SUPPLY hydraulic circuits, and the multiplex shift valve. Faults with these components will affect reverse, 1,4,5 and 6 gears. If the vehicle operates correctly in first and reverse, these components are functioning properly


  Overdrive Clutch


Condition Possible Sources Action
Overdrive clutch does not apply SSD filter screen blocked CLEAN or INSTALL a new solenoid.
REFER to: Solenoid (307-01B Automatic Transmission - 6-Speed Automatic Transmission – 6F35, Removal and Installation).

SSD is mechanically stuck OFF INSTALL a new solenoid.

Overdrive clutch (CBLR/C456) regulator valve stuck OFF DISASSEMBLE, CLEAN and INSPECT the overdrive clutch regulator valve. If bore or valve is damaged, INSTALL a new main control.

SSD SIG, CBLR/C456 SUPPLY, C456 SUPPLY, C456 hydraulic circuits blocked/leaking DISASSEMBLE and INSPECT the main control valve body and separator plate passages for debris/blockage. CLEAN as necessary.

Multiplex shift valve stuck in applied position DISASSEMBLE, CLEAN and INSPECT the multiplex shift valve. If bore or valve is damaged, INSTALL a new main control valve body.

C456 supply hydraulic circuit blocked or leaking DISASSEMBLE and INSPECT the transmission cover and support tower passages for debris/blockage. CLEAN as necessary.
REFER to: Transmission (307-01B Automatic Transmission - 6-Speed Automatic Transmission – 6F35, Overhaul).
REFER to: Transmission (307-01A Automatic Transmission - 6-Speed Automatic Transmission – 6F15, Overhaul).
Rear planetary carrier/center ring gear INSPECT the planetary carrier/center ring gear for wear and damage. INSTALL new components necessary.

Overdrive clutch friction plates DISASSEMBLE and INSPECT the overdrive clutch friction and steel plates. INSTALL new components as necessary.

Overdrive clutch piston seal leakage INSPECT the overdrive clutch piston and seals. INSTALL new components as necessary.

Overdrive clutch always applied SSD O-rings damaged INSTALL a new solenoid.

SSD mechanically stuck ON INSTALL a new solenoid.

Overdrive clutch regulator (CBLR/C456) valve stuck ON DISASSEMBLE, CLEAN and INSPECT the overdrive clutch regulator valve and bias spring. If bore or valve is damaged, INSTALL a new main control valve body.

SSD SIG, CBLR/C456 SUPPLY, C456 SUPPLY, C456 hydraulic circuits blocked/leaking DISASSEMBLE and INSPECT the main control valve body and separator plate passages for leakage. CLEAN as necessary.

Overdrive clutch friction plates DISASSEMBLE and INSPECT the overdrive clutch friction and steel plates. INSTALL new components as necessary.

Overdrive clutch piston return spring. INSPECT the return spring for damage. INSTALL new components as necessary.

Overdrive clutch delayed/soft/slipping apply Incorrect Transmission Strategy programmed into PCM Remove SSD and record solenoid band number.

REFER to: Solenoid (307-01B Automatic Transmission - 6-Speed Automatic Transmission – 6F35, Removal and Installation).
Using the scan tool, verify the correct band number is stored in the PCM . If band numbers do not match, replace SSD with correct band number.
SSD filter screen partially blocked INSTALL a new solenoid.

SSD mechanically sticking INSTALL a new solenoid.

Multiplex shift valve sticking DISASSEMBLE, CLEAN and INSPECT the multiplex shift valve. If bore or valve is damaged, INSTALL a new main control valve body.

C456 supply hydraulic circuit blocked or leaking DISASSEMBLE and INSPECT the transmission cover and support tower passages for debris/blockage. CLEAN as necessary.

Overdrive clutch friction plates DISASSEMBLE and INSPECT the overdrive clutch friction and steel plates. INSTALL new components as necessary.

Overdrive clutch piston seal leakage INSPECT the overdrive clutch piston and seals. INSTALL new components as necessary.

Overdrive clutch harsh apply Incorrect Transmission Strategy programmed into PCM Remove SSD and record solenoid band number.

REFER to: Solenoid (307-01B Automatic Transmission - 6-Speed Automatic Transmission – 6F35, Removal and Installation).

Overdrive clutch (CBLR/C456) boost valve sticking DISASSEMBLE, CLEAN and INSPECT the overdrive clutch boost valve and bias spring. If bore, valve or spring is damaged, INSTALL a new main control valve body.
